Het Pretpakket is gebaseerd op de gebundelde editie van La Rentrée gauloise, een album dat tien jaar geleden in een beperkte oplage in Frankrijk verscheen. Enkele van de verhalen werden in het Nederlands al voorgepubliceerd in verschillende bladen, maar waren nooit eerder echt gebundeld. De verhalen zijn deels geschreven en getekend door het Asterix-duo René Goscinny en Albert Uderzo, enkele heeft Uderzo volledig zelf geproduceerd.

Thicker than a normal album, it includes more than 20 original pages not featured in the 1993 limited edition which was organised with Gaumont video, as well as ten unpublished pages: 56 pages with such gems as Chanticleerix (5 unpublished pages) the Gaulish cock, which will certainly need some serious practice if it is to wake our little sleepyheads on the first day of the new school year or the Birth of Asterix (4 pages unpublished in album form), where we meet for the first time the parents of Asterix and Obelix, all signed by Albert Uderzo, in addition to pages created by the René Goscinny/Albert Uderzo duo in the 1960s and 1970s.
